Description
Cyrus Habibi-Likio was a proven multi-sport high school athlete who chose to play football at Oregon as the primary option in no small part to the stage and exposure of Pac-12 competition. The Ducks had two standout tailbacks in 2018, CJ Verdell and Travis Dye, but the plan never was to feature just one running back.
With the departure of Tony Brooks-James, many thought Habibi-Likio would get a chance to display his skills, and he did. He had five touchdowns, two against Bowling Green and two against New Mexico, and thus earned his position as the number two back behind Verdell. Against Arizona, he had a career-high 12 carries for 35 yards and four receptions for 28 yards.
There is no question Cyrus has all the physical tools to be a productive back. The combination of speed, power, explosiveness and balance is rare and can’t be coached. So why is he not producing at the level he is capable of? Habit is the key. It takes a certain amount of time and repetition to build a habit. Mastering skills and techniques often require 10,000 repetitions, but then the gains are minimal.
The good news for Habibi-Likio is that he has already experienced many of the 10,000 repetitions required to develop skill. If one watches his high school tape, it’s clear he is a tough, physical runner who has the ability to run with speed and power combination. The other good news is that he is surrounded by tremendous backs who have an excellent habit of how to play the position. They work hard and have developed those habits through intense competition and repetition.
The more Cyrus can be an example of being a tireless worker, the more he can be a leader at his position, the more his habits will become contagious to the entire group. Coaches will create game plans the would give all the backs opportunities to be successful. The key for Cyrus is to find a way to do it on the grass. He must use his God-given talent to be a physical, downhill runner who compliments Verdell, Dye and the rest of the backs whatever the Ducks want to accomplish.
The right habit patterns will allow him to focus on the competition rather than the game plan. It will allow coaches to simply tell him what they want done, rather than how they want it done. This then forces the defense to adjust to the Ducks personnel’s rather than the Ducks personnel having to adjust to what the defense is doing. By effectively executing his assignments and responsibilities, Cyrus will be able to impose his will on the opponent and he will be able to thrive in this system.
Cyrus enters fall camp as one of the most talented athletes on this team, and there is the potential for great things if he will align his habits with his talent. He is in the right place at the right time to do that.
He must continue to to stay the course with passion and joy, learning from his coaches and peers. There’s no doubt that he is capable of achieving great things for this program.
